Holiday Decorating Tips

Decorating for the holidays is a fun tradition, but be safe and competent about your holiday adornments.

Holiday lights and ornaments are a beautiful part of the season. Displays range from simple (think Charlie Brown) to over-the-top (think Clark Griswold). Whether planning on going all out or only a simple tree, Albuquerque Plumbing Heating Cooling has some helpful advice for making your decorations safe and practical.

Indoor

  • Lights – consider replacing older lights. Not only do newer models use less energy, but they have also improved safety features
  • Tree – keep real trees watered and inspect artificial trees for damage
  • Decor – keep all decorations away from open flames and out of walkways
  • Open Flames – never leave candles or fire unattended and make sure to extinguish thoroughly before leaving or going to bed

Outlets

  • do not overload sockets
  • only one multi-plug outlet should be used per wall outlet
  • inspect cords for any damage and replace them if necessary

Outdoor

Lights

  • Make sure all lights are rated for outdoors. The difference from the indoor rating is essential.
  • Examine strands for damage, and replace if any is found

Decor
Be careful putting up decorations around power lines

Ladders
Ensure the ladder is not damaged, secured to the ground, and that someone else assists you.

Outlets/Cords

  • As with the lights, ensure that all extension cords are for outdoor use.
  • Never chain together multiple plug outlets.
  • Keep all plugs and outlets clear of standing water – use a brick to elevate and waterproof outlet covers.

In General

  • Turn off all lights/decor before you leave home or go to bed.
  • Shop after holiday sales to find good deals to update your holiday decorations for next year.
  • Take lights down promptly after the holidays are over.
  • If available, use your home’s blueprints for length measurements.
