Albuquerque Plumbing, Heating & Cooling would like to remind you that Summer is basically right around the corner, and with it come longer days and warmer temperatures. Those longer days and warmer temperatures, in turn, increase the number of use hours we all put on our HVAC and air conditioning systems. And, that increase in use hours translates directly into higher energy bills. Let’s discuss a few different ways that you can reduce your energy use during the summer without having to sacrifice your comfort.
Turn the Air Conditioning Temperature Up
One of the easiest ways to reduce your energy costs (and carbon footprint) during the summer months is to simply increase the temperature that your AC is set to. For example, if you’re comfortable in your home when it’s 70 degrees Ferenheight, then try increasing the temp by a few degrees (to like 72) and see if you’re still comfortable. Even a small adjustment to the temperature can do wonders when it comes to saving you money on your HVAC energy bills.
Don’t Run the AC When You Aren’t Home
Another easy and effective way to reduce your summer energy bills is to simply make sure you don’t run your air conditioning system when you aren’t home. You can accomplish this by simply programming your thermostat to turn off during the hours you’re typically out of the house.
Keep Up With Your Air Conditioning Maintenance Procedures
The best way to save money on your air conditioning energy bills during the summer is to make sure that you’re up to date on all your air conditioning maintenance procedures. Our HVAC experts here at Albuquerque Plumbing, Heating & Cooling recommend taking the following steps every 3 months to make sure your air conditioning system is taken care of correctly:
- Change your filters
- Check your freon levels (it is best to leave this part to the professionals)
- Make sure your fan belts are clean and that they fit properly
- Clean your coils
Perpare Your Home for Warm Days
Another thing that you can do to help reduce your summer HVAC energy bill is to prepare your home for warmer days. Some ways to accomplish this task include:
- Keeping windows and blinds/drapes/curtains closed from morning until it is colder outside than it is inside
- Run fans in your home to circulate air and prevent hot-spots from developing
- Make sure your windows and doors are properly weather sealed
- Upgrade to double-paned windows
- Add insulation to your attic (where possible)
Replace Your AC With a More Energy Efficient One
Another way to help reduce your energy bills during the summer is to replace your old, inefficient air conditioning system with a modern one. The more efficient an air conditioner is, the less energy it will use to cool your home, and the lower your energy bills will be each month. A good rule of thumb is to replace an air conditioner that is either over 15 years old, or that has a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) of less than 10.
