Is Angie’s List a Reliable Source?
There are many consumers who are skeptical about Angie’s List because, unlike Yelp and other review websites, you must pay a subscription fee in order to view the listings. Despite this, the numbers show that renewal rates on Angie’s List have been steadily growing over the past few years. In addition to user growth, Angie’s List has been rapidly expanding to cover more cities and more services. Membership on Angie’s List actually varies by city. In newer areas that need more reviews, membership is free. Areas that have existed on the site for a long period of time have the most expensive fees.
While sites such as Yelp often focus on restaurants, nightlife, and coffee shops, Angie’s List focuses on services that have a “high-cost-of-failure.” This refers to services where hiring the wrong company could ultimately be a huge financial burden. Because of this, it is worth it for the consumer to pay the fee to register. The alternative might be to hire, for example, an inexperienced plumber, and pay the price in further repairs.
Furthermore, Angie’s List is very reliable because there are no anonymous reviews. You cannot see who provided an individual review, but everyone needs to create an account and pay the fee in order to post. Angie’s List also prevents company manipulation by keeping companies from reviewing themselves, or from deleting negative reviews. Furthermore, you can only review a company every six months, and you must provide evidence showing that you have no professional connection to the company.
What is the Super Service Award?
Angie’s List defines their Super Service Award as the highest honor that a company on the list can receive. It is awarded on a yearly basis, and Angie’s List does not charge any fees for companies to win it. The Super Service Award is intended to single out companies that have received, as well as maintained, a superior service rating over the course of the year.
The Super Service Award is especially important because less than 5% of the businesses on Angie’s List achieve it. It is also not available in all cities; to be a winner, your business must be in a city that meets a certain size and level of maturity on the Angie’s List website. The city must have existed on Angie’s List for at least a year, and the company must have a certain number of reviews, based on the market they are in. This makes the Super Service award very prestigious, and customers are much more likely to hire companies that win the award.
The award is calculated based on a GPA style system. A company must receive an A in three different areas: Overall Grade, Recent Grade, and Review Period Grade. The Overall Grade, which is an average of all reviews, must be at least a 3.5. The Recent Grade, which averages reviews from the past three years, must also be a 3.5. Finally, the Review Period Grade takes the average of reviews from November 1st of the previous year to October 31st of the current year. This GPA must be at least a 3.75 for between three and four reviews, a 3.67 for between five and seven reviews, and a 3.5 for eight or more reviews.
