Warm air rises, so if you attic is not properly insulated, that could be a huge problem. You can also improve insulation by adding weather stripping to doors and windows.

Extra Tips and Tricks

Another great way to keep warm air from escaping your home is reversing your ceiling fans. Most modern ceiling fans will come with a button for this, so it is no work at all. A ceiling fan running clockwise will push warm air down in to the room, keeping it from rising and drifting away like it normally does. You can also invest in a humidifier. This is particularly effective in the desert where there air is naturally very dry. Moist air not only feels warmer, it actually holds heat better as well. Alternative, you can consider buy some houseplants which will natural add humidity to the air.
